#ICUs in Florida reach capacity amid coronavirus surge

Intensive care units in Florida hospitals have reached capacity in 21 counties as the Sunshine State tackles a new surge in coronavirus cases, reports said Tuesday.

Data from the Agency for Health Care Administration shows 43 ICUs across 21 counties have hit their capacity and have zero beds available, Forbes reported.

Another 32 hospitals are dangerously close to reaching capacity, showing just 10% or less availability, the outlet reported.

Florida reported an additional 7,347 cases of COVID-19 Tuesday at a 16.3% positivity rate, which is the highest rate seen in a single day, the outlet said.

There were also 63 new deaths from the contagion, bringing the statewide death toll to 3,841, the outlet said.

While the deaths are nowhere close to what New York experienced at the height of the crisis in late March and April, doctors have said patients can languish for weeks, or even months, before finally succumbing.

“Deaths are a trailing indicator of cases,” Marc Lipsitch, an epidemiology professor at Harvard University’s T.C. Chan School of Public Health, told the Tampa Bay Times.

“That’s because it takes a long time for people to die, relative to when they got infected.”
