Back in 2022, Ice Spice shared a snippet of a song that was quickly roasted for sounding like something out of SpongeBob SquarePants. But the N.Y.C. rapper didn’t flinch, releasing the track under the name “Bikini Bottom,” after SpongeBob’s hometown. The track went on to become one of Spice’s signature songs, and carried on the considerable momentum of her previous track, her breakout single “Munch (Feelin’ U).”
Now things are coming around full circle, with Ice Spice set to join the cast of the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Titled The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, the film is due out in December. Spice joins a cast that includes Regina Hall (Scary Movie), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), Arturo Castro (Broad City, and George Lopez. Search will also star the show’s original voice actors including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob and Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick.
Spice will also contribute a new original song to the film’s soundtrack. So far this year she’s shared a remix of KATSEYE’s “Gnarly,” with her sophomore album Y2K arriving in 2024. She’ll be the second pop star this year to join a major animated film after Rihanna, who voices Smurfette in the upcoming Smurfs movie and has shared a tie-in single called “Friend of Mine.”
