Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a press conference that at least four people were killed when wind-swept trees fell on residences.
The fatalities included 68-year-old Jimmy Cart of Iota, who was killed when a 50 to 60-foot pine tree crashed into his bedroom, the Acadiana Advocate reported.
He was dead when first responders arrived at the scene, said Acadia Sheriff K.P. Gibson. No other people inside the home were injured.
A 14-year-old girl in Leesville was also killed when a tree fell into her home, Edwards said earlier Thursday.
ABC News reported six fatalities from the storm in Louisiana as of Thursday evening, according to “GMA” digital producer Tony Morrison.
A full assessment of the Laura’s damage will likely take days.
No deaths have so far been confirmed in Texas, which Gov. Greg Abbott said would amount to “a miracle.”
President Trump said is expected to visit the Gulf Coast this weekend to tour the wreckage.
