#Hulu’s Candy Trailer Introduces Jessica Biel as Axe Murderer Candy Montgomery

“Hulu’s Candy Trailer Introduces Jessica Biel as Axe Murderer Candy Montgomery”

Hulu is going back to 1980 with Candy, a chilling retelling of Candy Montgomery. The series will star Jessica Biel as Candy and Melanie Lynskey as her victim, Betty Gore. The newly released trailer and synopsis are available below.

Candy Montgomery is a 1980 housewife and mother who did everything right—good husband, two kids, nice house, even the careful planning and execution of transgressions—but when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. With deadly results.

From the direction of the teaser, it seems as if this series will be focusing not just on the murder, but the relationship between Montgomery and Gore. The trailer opens with Montgomery (Biel) sitting in the courtroom on trial. A nameless voice asks, “prior to June 13th, did you like Betty Gore?”

“I had no angry feelings towards her if that’s what the question is,” Candy responds in the trailer.

We are then treated to a series of cuts, a church choir rehearsal, a powdered drink being poured into a pitcher and creating a striking red, Betty staring across from the church parking lot. What starts as shots of a mundane, simple community blend with a tense soundtrack. “We were friends.” When asked what happened that night of June 13th, the trailer cuts to Candy staring at the camera and smiling.

Nick Antosca (The Act) will also be serving as executive producer under his banner Eat the Cat. Alex Hedlund will also executive produce along with Michelle Purple and Biel for Iron Ocean. Consulting producers will be Jim Atkinson and John Bloom. Michael Uppendahl (American Crime Story: Impeachment) is credited with directing the pilot. The series will be released in five parts.

The Bloody End to a Friendship

Candy by Hulu

This isn’t going to be the only series that will tell the story of the two former friends. Competing with Hulu will be HBO Max and their miniseries Love and Death. The competing series was created by David E. Kelley and stars Elizabeth Olson as Montgomery and Lily Rabe as Gore. Love and Death is set to premiere later this year.

It seems as if the story of Candy Montgomery is still alive and well as a tale of broken friendships and brutal murders. The story was made popular by a two-part article in the Texas Monthly, Love and Death in Silicon Prairie, Part 1: Candy Montgomery’s Affair and Love and Death in Silicon Prairie, Part 2: The Killing of Betty Gore. The articles paint the story in detail, from Candy and Betty’s blossoming friendship to Betty and her husband Allan’s struggling relationship, to Allan and Candy getting close and eventually having an affair… you can probably guess where this story ends.

Though Candy was found not guilty at the end of the trial, her story still holds strong in minds of the residents of Wylie, Texas. Whether you prefer a documentary or a dramatized retelling, Candy Montgomery’s story aims to reach new audiences this year. Candy is set to premiere on Hulu on May 9th, 2022.
