“#How Yankees created roster spot for Brett Gardner”
TAMPA – Brett Gardner is officially back with the Yankees, listed on the schedule for the team’s first full workout on Tuesday and on the 40-man roster.
To make room for Gardner, Luis Severino was placed on the 60-day IL as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery. Severino is expected back around midseason, and is scheduled to begin throwing from 120 feet Tuesday.
The Yankees also designated outfielder Greg Allen for assignment Tuesday when Justin Wilson’s signing became official.
Gardner will join an outfield that also includes Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Clint Frazier, Mike Tauchman.
Both Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman have stressed that they expect Frazier to be the everyday left fielder, but Gardner should get plenty of playing time, since his left-handed bat gives balance to a right-handed heavy lineup and Hicks and Judge have had injury issues in the past.
Gardner’s future in The Bronx seemed uncertain during the offseason, and the two sides only agreed to a deal last week.
