«Shenmue» as an anime? Yes, there is! We took a look at it and can tell you if it does justice to the series.
«Shenmue: The Animation» is based on the cult game series of the same name by Yu Suzuki and adapts the storyline from the first two games in the series. The 13 episodes of the martial arts anime were created in the animation studio Telecom Animation Filmwhere, among other things, the «Orange» series was animated.
Storyline of «Shenmue: The Animation»
Based on the SEGA game franchise, SHENMUE follows the story of Ryo Hazuki. After witnessing his father’s murder at the family dojo, Ryo devotes his life to finding who is responsible – a mission that will take him from the streets of Yokosuka, Japan to the sprawling metropolis of Hong Kong and beyond. He soon learns that greater, mythical powers are at play. Meanwhile, he trains to become the ultimate martial artist on a quest for revenge.
My opinion on anime
Admittedly, I didn’t even have a “Shenmue” anime on my screen. I discovered the anime adaptation of the popular game series quite by accident while scrolling through it. As a connoisseur of the games, my curiosity was quickly aroused, so I just threw the first episode straight away. Seeing Ryo Hazuki unwrap his moves from the games in animated form gave me a wave of nostalgia, and I was hooked within minutes of the anime. The animation style is kept fairly simple, which is quite fitting considering the series of games. In the anime, the story of Shenmue 1 & 2 is retold. It’s not a 1 to 1 adaptation, but it does include the most important story parts of the games. The makers didn’t shy away from adopting some situations from the games that have become memes here and there. The famous forklifts from the games can also be seen in the anime ;D. It’s fun to see how Ryo moves through the country, continues to grow and beat up gangsters, ruffians and co. on his way to revenge.
I warmly recommend the anime series to fans of the «Shenmue» series. It’s a great adaptation of the first two (and best) games in the series, and it’s really nostalgic. Everyone else can expect a quieter kind of martial arts anime. It’s not an action festival like “Baki” or “Kengan Ashura”. If you don’t mind this and just need an anime with classic martial arts action for in between, feel free to watch “Shenmue: The Animation”. With 13 episodes, the anime can be read through very quickly, which is why it is also a good way to bridge the time to the next AAA anime hit ;).
