#Portland cops hurt by 10-pound rock thrown by protestors

Two Portland police officers were hospitalized after protestors hurled a 10-pound rock at cops during the 79th night of clashes in the City of Roses, according to reports.

Police said the massive projectile was hurled by a protestor in a group who wore the word “press” on their clothes, CNN reported.

“Some of the crowd chants included, ‘Kill a cop, save a life,’ ” the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement Sunday, claiming the rock was thrown by someone with the work “press” on their clothes.

“People in the crowd continually threw large river rocks at officers,” the department said. “Officers reported having rocks, frozen eggs, glass bottles, and frozen water bottles thrown at them. Officers reported people were shining green lasers at them, which is against the law in Oregon.”

Police said demonstrators began gathering outside the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office inside the Penumbra Kelly Building on Saturday night, with the crowd swelling and growing increasingly violent into early Sunday morning.

The incident came after a tumultuous Friday night that also saw demonstrators hurl objects at police in riot gear.

Portland has been rocked by unrest since after the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25, sparking global calls for racial justice and an end to police brutality. The Oregon city has seen some of the worst violence in the US.

Portland police did not release additional information on the officers injured overnight. The department said it would release statistics on the number of overnight arrests later on Sunday.
