We’ve already seen plenty of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Google first revealed its new phones over three months ago, then ramped up its teaser videos over the last few weeks. However, they’re finally official today as Google took the stage to formally unveil the all-new, powerful, and colorful Pixel 6 lineup.

The regular Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch 90Hz screen, while the Pro gets a huge 6.7-inch 120Hz display, but that’s not the only difference between these phones. Perhaps the most exciting thing is that the rumors were true. Google’s new phones are high-end devices with more cameras and a lot to offer at affordable prices. The Pixel 6 is $599, while the bigger Pixel 6 Pro only costs $899.

Here’s everything you need to know about Google’s new flagship phone and when you can get your own.

This is the Pixel 6 Pro

The Pixel 6 Pro features an all-new, colorful design, complete with a bigger screen, under-display fingerprint scanner, Google’s new custom-built Tensor SoC processer, triple rear cameras, and Google’s Titan M2 security chip.

Google is going all-in on the Pixel 6 Pro when you see the spec sheet, too. This is the biggest Pixel ever released. It has a massive battery and packs four Pro-level cameras.

There’s plenty to love here, but the most important aspects are the big screen, powerful triple camera setup, and that large 5,000 mAh battery. Google finally built a high-end, no compromises, top-shelf Android flagship smartphone. The company says its new 50MP primary camera can capture up to 150% more light than previous models, the screen has a variable refresh rate (up to 120 Hz) for smooth performance, and it runs the latest Android 12 release.

Google Tensor Processor

The new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro run Google’s first custom processor made for Pixel, the Google Tensor SoC. It delivers improved performance, machine learning, and much more. For example, Google promises up to 80% faster performance than the Pixel 5 running a Qualcomm Snapdragon, which is a big claim.

Google says its Pixel 6 will run smoother, load apps faster than ever, immersive and responsive gaming, and advanced on-device AI and machine learning to deliver features you’ll only get on a Pixel. Some of those include more accurate speech recognition, improved image processing — which was already a strong point for Pixel — and vastly improved battery life.

Inside the new platform, the Pixel 6 also runs Google’s own Titan M2 security chip to keep devices safe and more resilient against hacks or attacks.

Pixel 6 Pro Cameras

A significant aspect of the Pixel 6 Pro is the camera setup on the back in terms of the design and for users. Google is finally going big with triple rear cameras, not to mention an improved 11.1MP front selfie camera.

Not only did Google deliver a new 50MP primary camera capable of capturing up to 150% more light than previous generations, but it also added in a 48MP telephoto zoom lens with 4x optical zoom and a 20x electronic zoom mode. Then, there’s a 12MP wide-angle for those landscape photography shots.

And while new camera hardware is undoubtedly important, as there’s a new 1/1.3 inch sensor for the primary camera, it’s the way the hardware and software work together that will be magical. Combining three new sensors with Google’s Tensor processor should offer what the company says is “revolutionary computational photography.” Photos and videos will provide greater detail and rich colors, and the Pixel cameras are picking up a slew of neat new features inside the Google Photos app.

The camera features list includes Magic Erase, Motion Mode, Real Tone, Face Unblur, Locked Photos, and several others we already know about, including Top Shot and Portrait mode. However, it’s the new Magic Eraser feature that looks the best. Magic Eraser lets you instantly remove photobombs, distractions, objects, strangers, or things in the background from a photo, all with a single tap. Again, Google’s computational photography does all the work.

Of course, the cameras also have optical and electronic image stabilization, can record in 4K, slo-mo up to 240FPS, fused video stabilization, astrophotography time-lapses, and more. This all looks great on paper, and we can’t wait to test it out and share the results in a full review — coming soon.
