“House of the Dragon is Just the Beginning for Game of Thrones Spinoffs, Showrunner Says”
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik explains how House of the Dragon could be the base for more stories in the future. “The Targaryens span both directions,” Sapochnik says. “So as a spine to other possible stories and spinoffs… this is a great place to start.” Sapochnik is right. The Targaryens or other characters introduced within the show could be explored at any point in time, from Aegon’s conquest to the Doom of Valyria.
HBO Chief Content officer Casey Bloys says, “I also liked the idea of focusing on one family, and obviously the Targaryens have a lot of drama to go around. I also liked how empires can quickly fall – those are the types of conversations we are having in our own country, which I don’t think is anything I would’ve thought we’d be talking about 20 years ago.”
Prepare to return to Westeros next month, August 21st, with House of the Dragon. The latest trailer for the series can be found below.
HBO is Full Steam Ahead With the Game of Thrones Universe
House of the Dragon isn’t the first Game of Thrones spinoff planned; it’s just the first to reach audiences. Initially, a spinoff revolving around The Long Knight, titled Bloodmoon, would be the first spinoff from the Game of Thrones franchise. However, the series starring Naomi Watts eventually fell through following a $30 million pilot episode.
In March 2021, news broke that three more GOT spinoffs were in the works, the first being The Sea Snake. The prequel would focus on Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Snake, a character played by Steve Toussaint in the House of the Dragon series. It’s unknown how the character would overlap between the two shows, and it may depend on his popularity with audiences.
Ten Thousand Ships is also in the works at HBO, following Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of House Martell who founded Dorne. Amanda Segel is writing the series and has already delivered a few drafts to George R.R. Martin. In addition, there’s a rumored Flea Bottom series centered on the King’s Landing Slums featured in the original show, where the poorest residents of the Westeros capital live. Last month, a sequel series featuring Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow was rumored to be in the works, with Emilia Clarke confirming the news.
It seems as if HBO and George R.R. Martin aren’t slowing down with the expansion of Game of Thrones, and we should only expect to hear more announcements in the future.
