A homeless Las Vegas man went for a dip in the Bellagio’s world-famous dancing fountains pool, where the water can be as deep as 13 feet, and ended up drowning.

The man, in his 40s, had been talking to himself Friday before he climbed into the pool, swam to the center and then started to struggle, the Associated Press reported.

One tourist jumped in to try to rescue the man but “unfortunately wasn’t able to get very far,” police Capt. Dori Koren told the Las Vegas Journal-Review. “It was too late by the time we responded.”

Fire Department divers recovered the body of the man, who has not been identified.

Kayla Eklund, a 21-year-old college student from Michigan, called 911 while the other tourist jumped in to try to rescue him.

The man, she said, had swam to the middle of the pool, turned back and started struggling near the spot where he jumped in.

“He was just staying in one spot treading water,” she told the Journal-Review. “He started yelling, ‘Help, help, help!’”

Koren reminded tourists not to swim in the many fountains. The Bellagio explicitly prohibits swimming in the pool.

“Please just make sure that you do not jump in for any reason,” he said.
