“Iman Vellani Speaks Out About Big Reveal in Ms. Marvel Finale”
The final episode of Ms. Marvel ended with a bombshell that not only shocked MCU fans, but series star Iman Vellani.
Originally, Kamala’s lineage was determined to be the reason she could access the Noor dimension until Bruno made an exciting discovery in the Ms. Marvel season finale. When looking further at Kamala’s DNA, he learned that something wasn’t quite right. As Bruno puts it, Kamala has some kind of “mutation”, a word which carried with it the iconic guitar riff of the 1990s X-Men animated series when it was said in the episode. This reveal seemingly means Kamala Khan is the first official mutant in the main MCU universe, a distinction that came as a shock to Ms. Marvel herself Iman Vellani:
“They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I immediately freaked out. I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I was like, ar you doing this like for real? Are you sure? I’m so honored! I was like yelling at hime through an email. I was freaking out. This is the biggest deal in the world, and the fact that it’s happening in our show is crazy.”
Ms. Marvel is the True Start of Mutant Introduction in the MCU
The revelation of Kamala’s mutation comes mere months after another mutant, Professor Charles Xavier, made an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Patrick Stewart returned to the role he played throughout multiple X-Men films, but it was a version that existed outside the MCU’s Earth-616 universe. While Earth-838 may have had mutants, that concept had yet to be introduced to the world of The Avengers until now. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have both been parts of the MCU, but their powers came from the Mind Stone as opposed to having a mutant gene. Agatha Harkness mentions in WandaVision that the stone unlocked something that was deep inside Wanda, and while that may end up being the mutant gene somewhere down the line, the implication, for now, is that Wanda possessed the power of the Scarlet Witch all along.
Now that the MCU’s version of Kamala has been revealed to be a mutant, it’s only a matter of time before more of her kind make their way into future Marvel projects. More details about the upcoming slate for Marvel Studios will be revealed this month at San Diego Comic-Con, as well as in September at D23, and either presentation could include more information about what Feige and company are planning for the further integration of mutants. Since Kamala will be back next summer in The Marvels, that film may also play into the burgeoning mutant storyline that Marvel is starting to lay the seeds for. With Kamala officially joining the ranks of the mutants, it’s only a matter of time before the X-Men make their way into the ever-expanding world of the MCU.
Ms. Marvel is now streaming in its entirety on Disney+.
