#NYC councilmen want vouchers for families ‘kicked in the shin’ by school plan

Five council members are pushing the city to give vouchers to families “kicked in the shin” by NYC’s school reopening plans so they can send their kids somewhere else.

The members wrote to Mayor de Blasio and schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, calling the city’s fall blueprint for mixed online and in-person learning — with kids attending one-, two- or three days a week at different times — “unacceptable” to all working parents.

The letter, obtained by The Post, tells de Blasio and Carranza that the city should spend education funding on vouchers that would allow working parents to send their kids to places that offer full-time, in-person classes, whether the school is parochial, private, charter, day-care or even in a nearby district.

“Working families should not be forced to pay taxes to fund a public-school system that is not providing full-time public school, and pay for the cost of (additional) school or child-care on top of it through no fault of their own,” wrote Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-Staten Island) in the letter, sent Thursday.

Borelli, who has a child entering kindergarten, told The Post he has heard from constituents unhappy with the DOE’s patchwork plans.

“If you’re a family where every adult has to work, this reopening plan is as good as a kick in the shin,” he said.

Adding their signatures were Bob Holden (D-Queens), Steven Matteo (R-Staten Island), Peter Koo (D-Queens), and Kalman Yeger (D-Brooklyn).
