#Hidden edge Giants have in coronavirus-restricted camp

MetLife Stadium is the shared East Rutherford home of the Giants and Jets, but its across-the-parking-lots proximity to the Giants’ offices and Quest Diagnostics Training Center will provide one team extra flexibility navigating a coronavirus-restricted training camp. The Athletic Health Jets Training Center is about 30 miles away in Florham Park.

In order to comply with NFL social distancing guidelines described as “humanly impossible” by Ravens coach John Harbaugh, the Giants will use multiple locker rooms inside the stadium, supplementing their regular gameday dressing space with locker rooms meant for visiting NFL teams or other tenants like high school teams and the XFL. They also will have access to luxury suites as makeshift meeting rooms when outdoors is not feasible.

The training headquarters only will be used for its three outdoor and one indoor fields.

Rookies will report to most teams around the league, including the Jets, on Tuesday, though the Giants pushed back their first day to Thursday, when quarterbacks and injured players can join. The rest of the veterans are due July 28.

COVID-19 testing for first-time returning Giants staff members began last week, and assistant coaches who reported back from all over the country were tested Friday. The NFL and its players union still are negotiating the specifics of how camps will be operated and the procedures for handling positive test results.

The Giants cleared their plan with the Jets, who had no objections. The logistics were first reported by NorthJersey.com and confirmed by The Post.
