The nation’s top health official is leading a delegation with the aim of supporting Taiwan’s international role in fighting the coronavirus pandemic and strengthening ties between the US and the island, which China claims as its own.
Azar — the highest-ranking US official to go to Taiwan in 40 years — landed late in the afternoon at Taipei’s Songshan airport, where he was met by Brent Christensen, the de facto US ambassador to Taiwan, and by Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang.
Washington broke off official ties with Taipei in 1979 in favor of Beijing.
On Monday, Azar is expected to sign a health cooperation memorandum of understanding with Taiwan’s government and visit Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control.
He’s also set to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen during his visit.
Beijing has been angered by the visit and previously threatened to take unspecified countermeasures.
