Torrential rain hammered Japan early Saturday, triggering landslides and flooding that forced tens of thousands from their homes, left more than a dozen presumed dead and many more missing.

Hardest hit is one of the country’s main islands, Kyushu, where rain fell at 4 inches an hour overnight. The deluge pushed authorities to order the evacuation of some 76,000 residents, reported DW, an international news outlet.

In the island’s district of Kumamoto, floodwaters and mud overtook a nursing home near a river, leaving 60 residents trapped, the Associated Press reported. Fourteen are presumed dead.

Video from NHK TV, Japan’s public channel, shows rescuers airlifting residents from their roofs and whisking away others in boats.

The forecast calls for more heavy rain through Sunday.
