“Harrison Ford Says He’s Done Playing Indy After Indiana Jones 5: ‘This Is It!'”

No matter how well Indiana Jones 5 might perform in theaters, don’t count on seeing a part six. At this stage, series star Harrison Ford will be seen back in the role of pop culture’s most popular archaeologist once again for a fifth Indiana Jones movie directed by James Mangold. Ahead of the film’s premiere next summer, it was showcased at Disney’s D23 Expo with Ford on hand to address the fans.

While on stage, Ford took the opportunity to confirm that he’s finished with the franchise after Indiana Jones 5. Playing the main character in an action adventure movie is no easy task, and it’s just getting to be too difficult for the 80-year-old actor. Ford is nonetheless excited for fans to see the new film, but told everyone to keep in mind that he’s done after this one. Here’s what he said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Thank you for making these films such an incredible experience for all of us. I’m very proud to say this one is fantastic. And [new franchise star Phoebe Waller-Bridge] is one of the reasons. Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure but they’re also about heart. I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell as well as a movie that will kick you’re a**. I’m delighted to be here again for maybe … No, not maybe. This is it! I will not fall down for you again. But thank you so much.”

We can’t fault Ford for feeling this way, as Indiana Jones 5 was not exactly the easiest project he’s ever had to shoot. During filming, he had injured his shoulder and had to take some time off for recovery. That followed the actor sustaining a broken leg while filming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, another legacy sequel that brought back one of Ford’s most famous characters from the past. Revisiting these franchises may have been fun for fans to see, but at this point, it would appear that Ford wants to focus on roles that aren’t so hard on his body.

Indiana Jones 5 Is Harrison Ford’s Last Hurrah as Indy

Harrison Ford has been playing Dr. Jones for more than 40 years, so his retirement as Indy is well-deserved. He debuted in the role in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, with the original trilogy including the follow-up films Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Ford returned for a fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in 2008.

James Mangold directs Indiana Jones 5 using a screenplay co-written with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth. Along with Harrison Ford, the film stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas.

We will see Ford’s final performance as Indy next summer, as Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on June 20, 2023.
