The Gainax-produced Gurren Lagann TV series premiered in 2007 and ran for 27 episodes. The mecha anime takes place in a future where mankind lives underground, with the discovery of a robot leading to a rebellion against the anti-human forces controlling the surface. Two compilation films, Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End and Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars, were released in 2008 and 2009.

Kill la Kill premiered in 2013 and ran for 25 episodes. It was Trigger’s first full TV series production. The story begins with the scissor blade-wielding school girl Ryuko Matoi arriving in Honnouji Academy to avenge her father.

Both anime were directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Promare, Cyberpunk Edgerunners). Imaishi and his Gurren Lagann assistant director Masahiko Otsuka (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Promare, Trigger president) co-founded Trigger with producer Kazuya Masumoto in 2011. Akira Amemiya (director of SSSS.Gridman, SSSS.Dynazenon, and Gridman Universe) was assistant director on Kill la Kill.

Gurren Lagann‘s character designer is Atsushi Nishigori (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, The Idolmaster director and character designer, Darling in the Franxx director and co-series composer, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time co-character designer).
