A throwback to his mixtape days.

You really had to be there. Gucci Mane’s mixtape era was a furious, controversial, and genre-shifting moment for hip-hop, and not just because of the music. The cover art for his projects were absurd even in the context of Atlanta trap, reflecting the infectious personality that would come to dominate rap, from its sound to its gossip blogs. He’s been a little more reserved with his cover art in his veteran era — the last time he got a bit silly was for 2017’s El Gato: The Human Glacier — but today, mixtape cover art Gucci is officially back.
“Woppenheimer,” the new song, wouldn’t be out today without a viral tweet. Last week, graphic designer @kyaxcheeks shared her concept art for a Gucci Mane song called “Woppenheimer,” inspired by Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer. At the time of the tweet, the song had not been announced publicly and may not have even existed at all, but the internet was 100% on board. Gucci took notice, and without warning shared the song at midnight. Crucially, it comes with @kyaxcheeks’s cover art, and she says that working with Gucci’s team was a great experience. Feel-good Twitter stories are rare and probably won’t be possible for much longer, so enjoy this one while you can and listen to “Oppenheimer” below.
