“#David Fizdale doesn’t see Knicks as good fit for Chris Paul”
It has been widely reported Knicks president Leon Rose would love to strike a deal for Paul, arguably his favorite client when he was at Creative Artists Agency. The rebuilding Thunder are hesitant to keep Paul because of the two years and $85.5 million left on his pact. Trading for Paul could exclude the Knicks from having a shot at the top players in the powerful 2021 free-agent class, headed by Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I think you can’t try to go big-game hunting all the time,’’ Fizdale said on ESPN’s “The Jump” on Friday. “You may plan for 2021, and think, I got this money. But that doesn’t mean you’re going to get the guys. I went through it.”
Indeed, Fizdale’s Knicks had hoped to lure Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the summer of 2019, and, instead, they joined the Nets. By December, Fizdale was out of a job.
“I think the Knicks have to be open to a lot of different things,’’ Fizdale said. “Would he be a great fit for them? Absolutely. I think he would fit those kids — Mitchell Robinson going to the rim, they get more spacing, more shooting. Absolutely, he would fit. The big stage. He doesn’t get sick [with COVID-19].”
Nevertheless, Fizdale added: “For him, where he is at his career, I don’t think it’s a good fit for him and what he’s trying to do.’’
Indeed, there have been mixed views on how much Paul prefers to play for a winner. One source told The Post recently he’d like to be on a title contender. Another report has stated the Knicks are on his list, too.
The Knicks have to be wary of Paul’s injury history. If they give up too many young assets, and he gets hurt, Rose’s Knicks would be left in the dark. Again.
