The new Urusei Yatsura anime has received a third trailer to preview its upcoming second cour, which begins on January 5 (effectively January 6 at 12:55 AM JST) in Japan.

The trailer also provides a sneak peek of the new opening song “I Wanna Muchuu” by MAISONdes feat. asmi and Surii. The new ending song will be announced on January 5.

Additionally, more cast members were announced including Aoi Yuuki as Ten, Ayahi Takagaki as Ryunosuke Fujinami, and Shigeru Chiba as Ryunosuke’s dad.

The first cour of Urusei Yatsura premiered in October. The anime, which adapts selected portions of Rumiko Takahashi‘s 1978 manga, will have four cours in total. 

The manga ran until 1987 and was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday. Viz Media describes the plot as:

In a high-stakes game of tag, Ataru must touch Lum’s horns in ten days—or aliens will take over the earth! The fact that Lum can fly doesn’t make Ataru’s job any easier. As it turns out, the game of tag is only the beginning of Ataru’s troubles, as he continues to attract strange encounters with otherworldly beings like beautiful snow spirit Oyuki and the sexy crow goblin Princess Kurama!

The new adaptation is directed by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind‘s Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura with Yuuko Kakihara (The Aquatope on White Sand) as series composer, Naoyuki Asano (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!) as character designer, and Masaru Yokoyama (Aoashi) as music composer. david production is the animation production company.

• Ayaka Nakamura (The Heike Story assistant color designer) as color designer

• Yuuichirou Osada (World Trigger 2nd Season and 3rd Season) as photography director

Meanwhile, the cast includes Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru Moroboshi, Sumire Uesaka as Lum, Maaya Uchida as Shinobu Miyake, Mamoru Miyano as Shutarou Mendou, Wataru Takagi as Cherry, and Miyuki Sawashiro as Sakura.

Urusei Yatsura previously inspired an 80s anime series, as well as multiple movies and OVAs. The series ran from 1981 to 1986 with Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) as chief director during the first 129 episodes and Kazuo Yamazaki (Yume Tsukai) for the rest. The movies were mostly released throughout the 80s, with one being released in 1991. The OVAs were mainly released during that time period, as well. Before the 2022 series, the most recent Urusei Yatsura anime was an OVA released in 2010.
