#Google now lets you search for a song by humming or singing

Google announced this week it is adding a “search a song” button to its search bar that will allow users to hum, sing or whistle the tunes to songs whose names they don’t know.

After you provide Google with your best rendition of the song in question, the search engine will provide a list of possible matches. Selecting a result will give users more information about the song and artist, and will also provide them with links to music videos and the option to listen to the song on a music streaming service.

Google says users won’t need to be trained singers for its machine learning algorithm to nail down a tune. Instead, it says each “song’s melody is like its fingerprint.”

“When you hum a melody into Search, our machine learning models transform the audio into a number-based sequence representing the song’s melody,” Google says. “The algorithms also take away all the other details, like accompanying instruments and the voice’s timbre and tone. What we’re left with is the song’s number-based sequence, or the fingerprint.”

The feature is now available on the most updated versions of the Google app.
