Last year, Google began accepting requests to remove phone numbers, addresses, and other personally identifiable information from Search results. It also introduced the “results about you” dashboard, which greatly simplifies the process of requesting a removal. Now, Google will proactively warn you of identifiable information in Search.

The idea here is pretty simple; you no longer need to search for your private information on Google. Instead, such information will be gathered automatically and listed on the “results about you” page. You can also send removal requests from this dashboard. (This feature is currently limited to the United States.)

Google can also send you push notifications when your information appears in new Search results. While push notifications may seem a bit obsessive, they’re a good option for anyone who’s dealing with doxxing or other online abuse.

Bear in mind that a removal request is just a request. Google will refuse to remove certain Search results, especially those that are hosted by government organizations, the education system, and other large institutions. If Google denies your request, it will usually ask you to contact the website that has published your name, address, or other personally-identifiable info.

Also, Google has no control over other websites. It can’t tell a website to delete your phone number or address, for example. If Google accepts your removal request, it will simply hide the relevant web page from Search.

Those who want to remove their personal information from Google Search should visit the “results about you” dashboard. Note that you need to give Google your personal information to get this thing set up—there’s a good chance that Google already knows your phone number and address, so this isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker.
