#Good Samaritan who died after helping a cop chase robber was caring NYC doorman

The man who died after trying to protect an off-duty cop during an attack in a Manhattan subway station was a kind local doorman — who had foiled another mugging just weeks earlier, his sister told The Post.

“He used to take care of the super’s dog.” Lourdes Calderon, 57, said of sibling Angel Calderon, 54. “He used to take care of tenants’ cats. There’s one person whose son has autism and couldn’t be home on time and Angel said, ‘Don’t worry. I’ll take him wherever he needs to go and wait for him and bring him back.’ He was very helpful.”

Angel, who lived in New Jersey and worked as a doorman at a building on West End Avenue, acted as a good Samaritan late Monday night when he chased and then held down a maniac who allegedly punched a 23-year-old cop in the face repeatedly and grabbed her purse on a No. 1 station at West 86th Street and Broadway.

After attacking the cop, the brute emptied her purse on the train and fled into the station.

That’s when Angel ran into him.

“He was coming out of work and went down to take the train and he was in the middle of a mugging,” Lourdes said. “I don’t think he knew that that was a police officer that was being mugged. He was just helping somebody.”

“The police came, they got the person and everything was fine,” she continued “So he said ‘OK, now I’m going home.’ So he takes the 1 train to go to 59th St. to switch over to the D but he never made it.”

Angel was found dead on the train at 72nd Street and Broadway.

Lourdes said officials told her she won’t receive a cause of death for weeks or longer because of a backlog of COVID-19 deaths. She believes that even though he had no health problems, he may have had a heart attack because of a family history. Her dad had one.

The alleged robber, Percy Freeman, stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 240 pounds, according to the city’s Department of Correction website.

“I’m sure the running was too much for him and the holding down,” Lourdes said. “He was kind and very giving. It makes you wonder: was it worth it?”

Lourdes said her brother had just started taking that train because he was nearly robbed on another line about two weeks ago, but foiled the attempt when he threw a water bottle in his attacker’s face, his sister said.

“My mother told him, ‘Don’t take that train anymore, take the 1 train,’” Lourdes recalled. “Then this happens!”

Lourdes said her and siblings were already mourning a 55-year-old sister who died from the coronavirus a month earlier and that the remaining family members are setting up a GoFundMe site for her brother’s funeral.

“I’m surprised the cop he helped didn’t reach out to us,” Lourdes said. “I’m not blaming anybody. He could have died at home. We just want to give him a proper burial.”

Freeman, 43, was arrested after the attack and charged with robbery. A judge set his bail at $25,000 bail Tuesday night and he was sent to Rikers Island.
