#Gleyber Torres’ first game back with Yankees is mixed bag

The Yankees got Gleyber Torres back in time for him to play in Baltimore on Saturday, a place where he flourishes — and even that wasn’t enough to save them.

Torres wasn’t as dominant against the Orioles as he has been in the past. But in his first game back from the injured list after missing 13 games with a strained left hamstring, he walked and doubled and the Yankees still lost, 6-1.

He walked on four pitches in the first and led off the fourth with a double to left.

“I felt good,’’ Torres said. “I just tried to have good at-bats.”

With most of the lineup flailing, and Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton still not expected to return anytime soon, the Yankees need more than good at-bats from Torres.

He was hitting just .231 with one homer, six RBIs and an OPS of .636 entering Saturday. Those numbers over Torres’ first 24 games are a long way from what he’s usually given the Yankees, as the 23-year-old has not looked good at the plate or at short in his adjustment from second base.

When Torres had another chance to impact Saturday’s game with two runners on and two outs, he flied to right to end the top of the fifth.

Boone has stressed the importance of resting players, but he said Torres “should be pretty good to go” after a planned day out of the lineup for the series finale in Baltimore on Sunday.

Torres said he’s fine and can play every day. He’s expected to start all three games in Buffalo this week against the Blue Jays, who the Yankees are battling for second place in the AL East.

“We’ll be smart about it,’’ Boone said of Torres’ playing time.

They can’t afford to give him much time off, as in addition to Judge and Stanton being out, Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks have been awful and Gio Urshela is also on the IL with bone spurs in his elbow.

And Luke Voit, who has at times carried the Yankees this season, is also in a funk.

Tyler Wade had mostly filled in for Torres at short and his inability to hit created another hole in a woeful Yankees lineup.

Wade started at second on Saturday in place of the resting DJ LeMahieu and is just 9-for-55 on the season.

“We hear all the time about who we have out, but the guys we ran out there tonight, we had a very capable lineup and we need to do a better job there,’’ Boone said. “This is a time we’re getting kicked in the mouth. This is not a time to feel sorry for ourselves.”
