#Gleyber Torres aiming to return to Yankees lineup this weekend

Gleyber Torres believes he can come off the injured list in time to add something to the Yankees’ lineup this weekend in Baltimore.

Out since Aug. 21 with left hamstring and quadriceps problems, the Yankees’ shortstop is set to join the alternate site in Scranton on Thursday and says there is a possibility he can return Saturday at Camden Yards.

“I need a few at-bats,’’ said Torres, who ran the bases and went through agility drills to test the leg Wednesday at Yankee Stadium before the Yankees’ 5-2 loss to the Rays. “Everything is fine, feeling really well. Go [Thursday] to Scranton and prepare to play in real games.’’

Not only was Torres unable to play he watched the Yankees lose the first four games he missed. They are 4-6 in games Torres has been out.

And despite Torres hitting .231 in 24 games that would be an improvement over what Tyler Wade and Jordy Mercer, who was designated for assignment on Monday, supplied at short.

Combined they went 3-for-23 (.130). Wade, who started for a sixth time at short in Torres’ absence on Wednesday, has one hit in a 14 at-bats after going 0-for-2 in the 5-2 loss. The hit was a solo home run against the Mets in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Mercer started four times with Torres out and went 2-for-9.
