#Giants Super Bowl ring heist was led by angry Patriots fan

Tom Brady and the 18-0 Patriots couldn’t stop the Giants from earning Super Bowl rings. But one New England fan tried to stop the Giants from receiving them.

Four months after the Giants shocked the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, professional thief Sean Murphy led a heist to steal millions of dollars of goods from a Massachusetts jewelry store, which had been tasked with creating the Giants’ championship rings.

Having learned in an article that the Attleboro store would make the rings, Murphy decided to steal the prizes of a team he perceived as lucky, according to a Bloomberg report, partly due to David Tyree’s game-changing helmet catch in the 2008 classic.

“F–k ’em,” Murphy thought, according to Bloomberg. “They don’t deserve them.”

So, Murphy, and an accomplice, cut a hole in the roof of the jewelry store, destroyed the alarm and removed a 1,000-pound safe from the premises.

In his possession were dozens of diamond-filled, 1.72 carat rings, including ones engraved with the names “Manning” and “Strahan,” according to Murphy, though a Giants spokesman said at the time that the rings were for full-time staffers, which did not include players or coaches.

Though the burglary was initially successful, Murphy had trouble finding a taker for the highly-publicized stolen rings. Already being investigated for various other crimes, Murphy was eventually caught by authorities, who found 27 Super Bowl rings in a safety deposit box. He’d given one ring to his girlfriend, which was discovered because another woman Murphy had a relationship with didn’t receive one and told the FBI.

“We got caught because he gave a f–king 20-year-old girl a Super Bowl ring,” said David Nassor, who was arrested after selling gold from the heist. “F–k him.”

Murphy, who has been in prison since 2009, claims he still possesses some of the Super Bowl rings.
