#Giants’ offense has been missing big plays

The word has been bandied about for a few weeks now: “explosive.’’

The Giants don’t have it. Their offense is missing it. Their longest run of the season is 23 yards, by quarterback Daniel Jones. Their longest run by a running back? Just 18 yards. The longest reception is a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Darius Slayton. The second-longest reception is just 29 yards.

“I think it starts with running the ball,’’ Slayton said. “Obviously, if you run the ball effectively, then defenses tend to come up a little bit closer and it’s a little bit easier to get behind people. Obviously, that’s something that I consider a skill of mine, so hopefully I’ll be able to do that. But I know as well my teammates are also capable of doing those things.’’

The Giants as a team are averaging 3.2 yards per rushing attempt and 10.3 yards per reception. Their opponents Sunday, the Rams, average 4.6 yards per rushing attempt and 13.7 yards per reception.

Jabrill Peppers lasted just nine snaps in last week’s loss to the 49ers before getting hurt while on the field with the extra-point block team. Alterations on defense are needed without him, and also on special teams. Golden Tate most likely steps in as the punt returner, with Slayton and C.J. Board also options.

After acclimating for two games, safety Logan Ryan last week moved into the starting lineup and played all 77 snaps on defense, supplanting Julian Love. The injury to Peppers forced Love back onto the field.

“The thought was to get Logan’s experience and versatility on the field,’’ defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said. “He’s got great leadership, he’s got great energy, he’s played in a lot of football games and been productive in a lot of games. Just trying to get him on the grass. It was nothing against Julian, it was more getting the experience and the leadership on the grass.’’

One imperative moving forward: The Giants cannot stay on the field for 77 snaps on defense as they did versus the 49ers.

“I don’t want to speak for our guys, I just know the reality,’’ outside linebackers coach Bret Bielema said. “I got in there after the game and looked at the play sheet and realized we played that many snaps, as a coach you are into the game and you don’t really know. I do remember looking at the score and going in at halftime and felt like we’d been out there for four hours. It was just a different type of game as it unfolded.’’

Saquon Barkley, on injured reserve and awaiting knee surgery, will not make the trip, and he will be missed.

“Well, his personality first of all,’’ running backs coach Burton Burns said. “He’s a very positive person, he’s a very team-minded person. Saquon was in the locker room before the game [versus the 49ers] to encourage the other guys. Just little things like that, he has a lot of respect for his teammates, they obviously have a lot of respect for him. Just his presence goes a long way.’’

WR Austin Mack was activated off the practice squad. Mack was undrafted out of Ohio State. … TE Eric Tomlinson was re-signed to the practice squad.
