In a letter filed Tuesday in Manhattan federal court, the lawyer, Jeffrey Pagliuca, cited public comments made by Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss, the head of New York’s FBI office and lawyers for Maxwell’s accusers.
The comments, he said, show that an order is necessary to prevent “prejudicial pretrial publicity by the government, its agents, and lawyers for alleged witnesses.”
He specifically pointed to comments made at a news conference by William Sweeney, head of New York’s FBI office, who referenced Maxwell as “one of the villains in this investigation” and compared her to a snake that “slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire.” Maxwell was arrested at the property in Bradford on July 2.
Through a spokesman, prosecutors declined to comment on the gag order request.
The request was filed the same day President Donald Trump replied, “I just wish her well, frankly,” when questioned about Maxwell.
“I’ve met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach, but I wish her well,” the president said.
Maxwell, 58, was arrested on a six-count indictment charging her with grooming young girls for sex.
The charges stem from Maxwell’s role “in the sexual exploitation and abuse of multiple minor girls by Jeffrey Epstein” as early as 1994, court papers say.
She is expected to spend a year awaiting trial at the Brooklyn Detention Center, where she has been held since shortly after her arrest.
Her arrest came almost a year after Epstein was busted on federal sex trafficking charges on July 6, 2019.
He committed suicide in August a day after some 2,000 court documents were unsealed in a related civil case, revealing details of his alleged sex ring.
