#Ghislaine Maxwell compared to Charles Manson, Jimmy Hoffa in court papers

If Charles Manson could get a fair trial despite the media circus that surrounded him, Ghislaine Maxwell shouldn’t have anything to worry about, lawyers for her accuser wrote in court papers Wednesday.

In the filing in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the lawyers for accuser Virginia Giuffre urged the court to unseal depositions Maxwell gave years ago about her sex life in the defamation case Giuffre brought against the alleged madam.

Maxwell filed an appeal in July to keep the depositions secret after a district court judge ordered them unsealed — arguing they’ll garner sensational media attention if they’re made public and block her fair trial right.

In Wednesday’s filing, Giuffre’s attorneys argued, in part, that Maxwell’s claim that the sealed depositions will infringe on her right to a fair trial is bunk — especially in New York City.

“Cases holding pretrial publicity to be sufficiently prejudicial to a defendant’s criminal trial have typically occurred in small communities, and not in large cities such as New York,” they wrote.

They added that a number of trials in past decades have drawn intense media coverage, but have nonetheless been tried.

They cited the trials of former mobbed-up labor leader Jimmy Hoffa and “murderer and cult leader” Charles Manson to prove the point.

“The fact that a case receives enormous publicity does not by itself establish error nor does conceded ‘massive’ publicity automatically translate into prejudice,” the court papers state.

When Maxwell filed the appeal, her attorneys argued “the media has all but convicted” Maxwell in a separate criminal case against her.

“Unless this Court stays the unsealing of the deposition material, there will be nothing to protect against uncritical reporting of the deposition material’s contents, reporting that will only undermine the ability to secure a fair trial for Ms. Maxwell,” they argued.

Maxwell was arrested this summer and charged with procuring underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse. She’s pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail pending her trial.
