Waving signs that read “Black lives matter more than white feelings” and “I can’t breath,” the crowd, including local residents, marched along the waterfront streets of Sag Harbor on Long Island — not far from where celebrities such as Christie Brinkley and Paul Simon own multi-million dollar homes.
“We’ve seen all of the images from the last week and seen [Floyd’s] story as incredible police brutality,” said one local protester, Leslie Abbey. “We all need to come out … and do whatever we can to take anti-racist steps and prevent this from happening again.”
Another protester, Hanna Dietz, added, “With everything going on with George Floyd, it’s important to come out and support the movement.”
The death of Floyd, who was black, at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer on May 25 has sparked nationwide protest and riots.
In Sag Harbor, demonstrators wore face masks and remained peaceful throughout the three-hour protest.
