California Gov. Gavin Newsom declined to speak ill of ex-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle after she called out the state for its handling of current drug and homelessness crises during her Republican National Convention address.

Newsom, a Democrat who was married to the former Fox News host from 2001 to 2006, was taking questions from reporters Wednesday when he was asked “I’m curious if you are watching the RNC, and if you had a response to your ex-wife who said in prime time…that California is ‘a land of discarded heroin needles in parks, riots and streets and blackouts in homes.’”

The California governor acknowledged that his lack of an answer “may leave you wanting,” but still declined to address his ex’s comments on the state of his state.

“Let me just extend appreciation for your effort to get my response and I respectfully defer to the next question,” Newsom said before moving to another reporter.

The former couple, dubbed “The New Kennedys” in a 2004 Harper’s Bazaar spread, remained friendly after their split despite their difference in politics.

In a 2018 Washington Post profile on Guilfoyle, she told the paper that their split was an amicable one and that the two still spoke.

Recounting a recent phone call between the two, the Trump campaign surrogate, who had begun dating Donald Trump Jr. by that point, “playfully threatened” to bring her new boyfriend to the Golden State to campaign against him.

Then, she put Trump Jr. and Newsom on the phone together, during which she said they joked about having similarly styled hair.

Asked about her political differences with Newsom during their marriage, Guilfoyle maintained that she had always been a Republican, but the two shared pro-business views.

During a joint interview together with Charlie Rose in 2004, Newsom described Guilfoyle as modestly more conservative than him.

Asked in 2019 about the relationship by Buzzfeed News, and specifically whether President Trump had ever brought up his past relationship with his son’s girlfriend, Newsom demurred.

“We may have had a private moment on that conversation, which in and of itself, makes life just interesting,” he said.

Pressed further, he reiterated, “Life’s interesting.”

Guilfoyle did not mention Newsom by name during her 2020 RNC remarks Monday night, but she pulled no punches when discussing her home state.

“If you want to see the Socialist Biden-Harris future for our country, just take a look at California. It is a place of immense wealth, immeasurable innovation, and immaculate environment, and the Democrats turned it into a land of discarded heroin needles in parks, riots in streets, and blackouts in homes.

“In President Trump’s America, we light things up. We don’t dim them down. We build things up, we don’t burn them down. We kneel in prayer and we stand for our flag,” she said.
