#Fury as Kathy Hochul calls Buffalo flakes crisis, shuns migrant flood

“Fury as Kathy Hochul calls Buffalo flakes crisis, shuns migrant flood”

Outrage greeted Gov. Kathy Hochul’s decision to spring into action Thursday when her hometown was forecast to be hit by a huge snowstorm — with critics saying she still hasn’t lifted a finger to help the Big Apple deal with its $1 billion migrant crisis.

Hochul’s emergency declaration for the 11 counties around Buffalo — which are generally prepared to be hit with this type of a blast — paved the way for federal aid to flow there if a “major disaster” results from the expected 4 to 6 feet of snow in the area.

But nearly six weeks after Mayor Eric Adams declared a city state of emergency over the flood of migrants to the city, Hochul has yet to respond to his desperate plea for help from the state and federal governments.

City Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island) said there was “no other crisis in New York that is costing the city at a minimum $600 million, if not higher.”

“And if that isn’t seen as an emergency then my definition of the word ’emergency’ is very different from the governor’s,” he said.

Staten Island residents who live near a group of hotels that have been converted into shelters for migrants — some of whom promptly began going door-to-door for handouts — also blasted Hochul’s reaction to the upstate forecast.

“Buffalo has been dealing with snow for a long time. Buffalo doesn’t need Hochul. Staten Island needs Hochul,” said Kelli Dennis, 42.

“It’s been, what, two months now that these hotels have been occupied and there’s been no change. Nothing. It breaks my heart every day.”

Dennis said Hochul “either can’t or won’t deal with it…and apparently, that’s OK because she won the election anyway.”

Another resident, who identified himself as Frank, 49, said Hochul was “on this storm like a pig in s–t.”

“Kathy puts on her windbreaker and gets on TV and reassures everybody that we’re in good hands. It’s a slam dunk,” he said.

“A migrant crisis, on the other hand, that she has to put her neck out for and she doesn’t want to do that. She’s gonna stall and stall and stall, like she did before the election — only now that she’s won, she can stall indefinitely because there’s nothing really to lose.”

US Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island, Brooklyn) said there was “a lack of leadership when it comes to the governor’s office on this issue.”

“We have only heard from the mayor’s office on this issue,” she said.

Malliotakis also said Hochul “should be calling for more asylum officers at the border before they disperse to other parts of the country” and “speaking to the governors of other states to see how collectively they could be working to pressure President Biden.”

On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams — who wants $1 billion in emergency federal aid for the migrant crisis — said Hochul and Biden were too busy “running around from one location to the next” ahead of the midterm elections to discuss the situation.

“We think that the campaign season is over, it’s time for people to focus on this issue, we need to be reimbursed,” he said at the time.

More than 25,100 migrants have been processed through the city’s shelter system and more than 18,200 were being housed at taxpayer expense as of Wednesday, according to the latest figures from City Hall.

Hochul spokeswoman Hazel Crampton-Hays said that the governor “has held repeated calls with White House officials and the Department of Homeland Security, asking them to provide additional resources to the city and to consider additional flexibility in the work permit rules for asylum seekers.”

“We have been coordinating closely with the city to help address the immediate needs of asylum seekers coming to our state, including by providing transportation and deploying the National Guard to support the city’s efforts, and we continue to support the city’s requests for federal assistance,” she added.

Last week, the governor said she expected “conversations about [the migrant crisis] this in the next budget” and said she’d assured Adams that the state “would be as helpful as we need to be.”

A spokesman for Mayor Adams told The Post: “ Declaring a state of emergency by the state would not open up funding.”

“We are working with our partners to seek the federal funds necessary to pay for this humanitarian crisis,” the rep said.
