#Frolic is the ‘Keurig for ice-creams’ that lets you prepare rich homemade ice cream in just 2 minutes

“Frolic is the ‘Keurig for ice-creams’ that lets you prepare rich homemade ice cream in just 2 minutes”

Who knew making instant ice cream would be faster and easier than making instant ramen?

Honestly though, the term ‘Keurig for ice-creams’ does a major disservice to the Frolic. Keurig, after all, just pierces a pod and dispenses its contents… Frolic, on the other hand, lets you make regular, fat-free, or vegan ice creams in just under 2 minutes, in practically any flavor of your choice. Getting a recommendation from Michelin-star chefs who have also been in the running for James Beard awards, the Frolic magically churns ice cream using just a singular pod and any flavoring element of your choice – fruits, syrups, chocolates, biscuits, hot sauce (?), it’s all up to you. The resulting ice cream is entirely preservative-free, made in front of your eyes, and has the consistency of gelato, thanks to the much smaller ice crystals (up to 90% smaller). This means your ice cream is always lusciously creamy, and never bends or breaks your spoon even after sitting in the fridge for days. Most importantly, it’s easier than opening an app and ordering ice cream online.

The Frolic device itself is a slim little appliance, no larger than a Keurig or Sodastream. It has an uncomplicated single button interface and a retro-inspired design that has a distinct 70s appeal. Priced at $389 (although that’s only for Kickstarter backers), the Frolic works on a pod-based system, and the company offers 3 types of pods – a regular, a lite, and a vegan, which serve as the base for your ice cream. You can choose between two broad flavor profiles – vanilla, or chocolate, and customize them using anything from fruits to Oreos to create your own unique blend. The pods contain a combination of dairy and cane sugar, although the vegan version uses coconut milk instead of dairy, and the lite variant has its own natural thickening agents. All the pods are eggless too, making them vegetarian-friendly.

What’s even more remarkable is that the pods don’t need any pre-freezing. They can be kept on your countertop and just popped into the Frolic on demand. Hit the button and the Frolic gets to work. A small churner enters the pod (which sits at the base of the Frolic) and turns super-cold as it churns your ice cream, whipping it into a frozen dessert in the process which takes all of 2 minutes. You can pre-add your toppings into the pod to have them whipped into the cream, or sprinkle them on top after your ice cream is made, and that’s pretty much all there is to it. Unlike with making ice cream from scratch, you don’t need to use expensive churners, dangerous nitrogen gas, or messy double-bowl churning methods. All the Frolic really requires is pressing one button to make your ice cream, and you don’t have to worry about doing the dishes after. In fact, the only thing you need to wash is the Frolic’s tiny churner, which you can rinse under a running tap. The pod in which your ice cream gets made becomes the ice cream cup that you eat from, and if you want to save some for later, each pod comes with a lid that you can pop on before tossing into the freezer for later.

Frolic ice cream comes out smooth and creamy every time because the ice crystals are up to 10x smaller than traditional ice cream makers and store-bought ice cream.

The Frolic starts at $389 (with 2 pods included), making it a good $60 cheaper compared to its $449 MSRP. The on-demand ice-cream maker begins shipping globally starting June 2022, and you can grab either 5 or 10 pods at a time priced at $7 per pod, or snag a subscription that gives you your creamy fix at $6 per pod.
