#Frank Gore not fazed by diminished role with Jets

It is not good to be a 37-year-old on a team that is turning to its young players, but that is where Jets running back Frank Gore finds himself.

At 0-7, the Jets are trying to get their rookies more involved. That has meant more reps for fourth-round pick La’Mical Perine at running back and less for Gore. Last week against Buffalo, Gore saw his playing time drop to 28 percent of the offensive snaps. He played just 16 plays. Gore still ran the ball 11 times for 60 yards, his best yard per carry average of the season.

The veteran has been through this before. As a member of the Bills last season, Gore saw his role decrease in the second half of the year as Buffalo played rookie Devin Singletary more. Gore said his approach won’t change as his role decreases.

“Just continue to be me,” Gore said. “Whenever my number gets called, I try to go out there and make plays.”. Like I tell people, I can’t play this game forever, but I know I can still play this game. I know y’all see it. I know other teams see it. When I get the opportunity, I get a fair chance, I can make things happen still.”

Gore is the No. 3 rusher all-time in NFL history, trailing just Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. Gore has embraced being a mentor to Perine.

“This organization wants to see their young guys grow,” Gore said. “Me, I’m going to come out every day and work hard and show him what it takes if he has the opportunity to make it as far as I did.”

There is a lot of focus on the Chiefs offense, but their defense has some studs, too. Defensive tackle Chris Jones is one of the best players in football and presents a huge challenge for the Jets’ struggling offensive line.

“It’s one of those tough ones of, ‘How do you stop this guy?’ He’s been phenomenal, really since he’s got in the league,” Jets coach Adam Gase said of Jones. “Just big, fast, his instincts are unbelievable. He just seems to know the right time to do all his moves.”

The Jets made several roster moves Saturday. They signed kicker Sergio Castillo off the practice squad with Sam Ficken (groin) expected to miss Sunday’s game. They placed safety Bradley McDougald (shoulder) on IR. They activated CB Arthur Maulet off of IR. They elevated LB Bryce Hager and WR Jaleel Scott off the practice squad. They ruled OL Cameron Clark out with an illness.
