Former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, the first woman elected to the position, died on Sunday. She was 94.

Shulman, who served the office from 1986 to 2002, was battling lung and pancreatic cancer, her family told QNS.com.

The former borough president died at home surrounded by her family.

Politicians around the city reacted to Shulman’s death.

“Claire Shulman was larger-than-life,” interim Queens Borough President Sharon Lee said.

“She transformed the landscape of the City’s largest borough, and so much of what we see and enjoy today are the results of her extraordinary vision and decisions made over 18 years ago.”

City Comptroller Scott Stringer said, “Claire Shulman was a trailblazer and someone who embodied Queens to her core. She will be deeply missed.”
