“Why Edwina Sharma Should Return”

Spoiler Warning: Bridgerton Season 2Bridgerton season 2 found viewers entangled in a love triangle, going to art school, and experiencing plenty of iconic fashion moments. Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) has decided to marry this social season, much to the excitement of the ton. However, Anthony is picky, interviewing a list of women before deciding. He will wait to see who the season’s diamond is and make her his wife. However, no one could account for the diamond being newcomer Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran) from India. Anyone trying to court her had to go through her older sister Kathani “Kate” Sharma (Simone Ashley).

Based on the series of books by Julia Quinn and developed into a show by Shonda Rhimes, Bridgerton previously took the world by storm when Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) took viewers on their journey from fake courters to real lovers. Like season 1, season 2 has a happy ending, but not for Edwina. The happy ending audiences are treated to is Anthony and Kate getting married. Including Edwina in season 3 gives her the opportunity to find a love match, see where a diamond ends up after her season ends, and maybe even the return of a season 1 character.

Finding Her Love Match

Edwina spent much of the season arguing with her sister about her suitors. The one suitor she wanted, Anthony, was the one her sister didn’t want for her. This created a lot of tension, with Edwina sure Anthony was her love match and trying to defend that to her sister. Once she and Anthony reached the altar, she realized he wasn’t her love match but her sister’s and decided not to marry him. While it was great she took charge of her own destiny, it meant she spent an entire social season pursuing a love match that wasn’t meant to be.

If Edwina returns for season 3, she has a second chance for her love match. She wants to find a love match and be married, and it isn’t fair that her first social season was ruined. If the Featheringtons can participate in several seasons and find a love match (So happy for you, Philippa!), then so can Edwina. While it is unlikely she will be named the season diamond again, she still had ample suitors before Anthony became the front-runner, and there is no reason she shouldn’t have that again. While the stigma of the “failed” marriage may still be there, with the time that’s passed, there should be plenty of other gossip for the ton to worry about.

Return of a Prince

Who can forget about Queen Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel) grandnephew, Prince Frederick of Prussia (Freddie Stroma)? The Prince tried to court Daphne during season 1 before going back home without a wife. While he didn’t appear in season 2 in person, he was slyly mentioned by the Queen. She asks Edwina during the final episode if she has told her about her grandnephew, making sure to say he is a prince and he’s available. This confirms that Prince Frederick has not yet found a wife and that the Queen thinks Edwina would make a great wife for him.

If Edwina returns in the next season, she doesn’t necessarily have to be returning unwed and ready for a new social season. She could have a guest role, returning with her new husband and title, during one of the events hosted by the Queen. While the Queen would undoubtedly show the couple off because she has to be right about her diamonds, it would still incorporate Edwina into the new season. She could even participate in the social season, and the Prince comes back to town in hopes his second trip will do the trick.

Keeping Up with the Diamonds

Edwina was named the diamond of the season by Queen Charlotte. The Queen names a diamond every social season, marking the young lady she believes to be the most desirable to the men hoping to marry. As soon as Edwina is named the diamond at a party, all the men try to dance with her, though Anthony asserts his dominance and claims the first dance. Being named the diamond is considered a great honor and almost certainly guarantees a woman’s success during the social season.

Daphne was the diamond of the social season during Bridgerton’s first season, and she was present in season 2. She shared advice with Eloise, realized Anthony’s true desires before he was willing to admit them, and showed just how life as a diamond is after finding your match. Including Edwina in the next seasons, especially because Kate will likely be around, makes sense and lets audiences see a different diamond’s journey, especially if Edwina participates in the social season again.

Edwina deserves her second chance at love, and fans should get to see it. It gives the audience a glimpse into a previous diamond and even the possibility of a season 1 character returning to be her love match.
