In the epilogue, we see Sannoh’s ace, Eiji Sawakita, playing in America. No surprise though, as it was always a given that Eiji would keep pursuing his passion for basketball. As he was also regarded as Japan’s top high school player and the inter-high tournament’s finest point guard.

In a surprising twist for viewers, Shohoku’s speedster also pursued college basketball abroad, serving to round out Ryota’s character development from the movie.

  • In the film, multiple characters remark on Ryota’s inability to measure up to his older brother Sota, who was both tall and a highly skilled basketball player.
  • Throughout the series, Ryota was always overlooked because of his short stature as a basketball player.
  • He had frequently faced off against rival schools’ standout players such as Shoyo High School’s Kenji Fujima or Kainan University’s Maki Shinichi.

However, Ryota’s never-give-up attitude and love for basketball earned him the respect of higher-ranked players in the tournament. Making him a prominent backstory, and also giving the film a necessary beating heart and soul.

Why was Ryota Miyagi shown in the post-credits in the Slam Dunk Movie?

The movie’s last scene depicts Ryota defying the odds. While securing a starting spot on an American college basketball team, following in Eiji’s footsteps. After the inter-high tournament, Ryota took over the team captain position from Akagi after the latter graduated. By dedicating himself to becoming a strong leader, Ryota may have increased his appearance as a player for American colleges.

The end credit scene showed the Miyagi family had come to terms with Sota’s sudden death. In the movie, Sota’s absence creates a rift between Ryota and his mother. Which they eventually overcame after Shohoku’s victory over Sannoh.

Their home now has pictures of Sota in remembrance of their late family member.
