The troubled start of the COVID-19-wracked school year got even wilder for teachers at a Sunset Park school, when they had to temporarily abandon their remote classes Tuesday because of a fire alarm.
Teacher Annie Tan said the unwelcome racket only added to ongoing staff bewilderment.
She posted video of the din to Twitter and said teachers had to leave students hanging.
“I was just about to start a Zoom meeting with my students, and then FIRE DRILL,” she wrote. “With staff only in the building! As other colleagues left their kids on Google Meets and Zoom by themselves… When you think things can’t get more absurd…”
Tan reported that a co-worker announced to her class that she had to leave the building and that one student made the most of the opportunity.
“I AM THE TEACHER NOW!” the child said to their classmates, she wrote.
Tan later said that the piercing noise was a false alarm rather than a supremely ill-timed drill.
Her school is slated to start phasing in students for classroom learning next week, Tan said.
