#Daisy Ridley’s Best Moments in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film to gross over $1 billion before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Star Wars franchise has been experiencing a hiatus regarding theatrically released films. Lucasfilm Ltd. is instead focusing on Star Wars television series on Disney+ which include The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is now over, with Disney and Lucasfilm concluding the era that introduces Rey, Finn, Ben Solo, BB-8, and Poe Dameron. From lone scavenger, to Resistance fighter, to ultimately becoming a Jedi Master, Rey is one of the most important characters in all of Star Wars film history. Here are Daisy Ridley‘s best moments as Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

9 Rey on Jakku (The Force Awakens)

Cutting away from FN-2187’s bloodsmeared Stormtrooper helmet to Rey’s scavenger mask, Star Wars: Episode VI – The Force Awakens constructs a perfect scene when introducing the character of Rey to the audience. Unlike FN-2187, who will later be assigned the name, Finn, Rey does not live among others like herself or with a clearly defined purpose. Her scavenger goggles are stormtrooper helmet lenses, and every day, Rey is just trying to get by and survive.

Composer John Williams hypnotises the audience like Obi-Wan Kenobi with a Jedi Mind Trick, but with “Rey’s Theme.” The music conveys the loneliness that Rey feels, and the tough, solitary life she lives. However, the music also feels adventurous and hopeful, hinting at the incredible journey that Rey will soon begin. While a farmboy Luke in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope wants desperately to leave his home, Rey clings on to the delusion that if she just stays on Jakku, she will one day be reunited with her parents.

8 “The Garbage Will Do!” (The Force Awakens)

In real life, the Millenium Falcon is an iconic ship that is loved by Star Wars fans. In a galaxy far, far away, the ship is often compared to garbage. “What a piece of junk!” Luke exclaims, expressing his disapproval of the ship in the original Star Wars film. Decades later, while running from the First Order with Finn and BB-8, Rey calls the Falcon “garbage” but tells Finn that the “garbage will do!” when planning their escape.

Aside from a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, this is the first time Star Wars fans see the Millenium Falcon in a live-action Star Wars film since 1983’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Not surprisingly, the scene is an effective moment of fan service and begins to develop the camaraderie between Rey, Finn, and BB-8. As Rey employs her piloting skill she developed running flight sims, and Finn mans the Falcon’s cannons, the scene is high-energy, exciting, and a joy for fans to watch.

7 Rey Catches the Skywalker Saber (The Force Awakens)

The Star Wars franchise in film before The Force Awakens did not feature a woman lead that is either a Jedi or a Sith. Marketing for The Force Awakens prominently featured Finn wielding the iconic blue lightsaber that previously belonged to Anakin and Luke Skywalker. After Kylo Ren defeats Finn and attempts to take the lightsaber, many fans did not expect the lightsaber to fly into Rey’s hands. It is unfortunate that John Boyega’s Finn, a Black character, was used to mislead fans into thinking he was the main hero, in order to hide that was, in fact, Rey who would become the Jedi. Boyega and the Star Wars fan community have rightfully called out Disney and Lucasfilm for their less than satisfactory treatment of the character.

However, for Rey, this is an important part of her journey and introduces the first woman protagonist that is a Jedi in the live-action Star Wars films. The look of defiance on Rey’s face, her heroic stance as the snow falls behind her, and the blue hue of the lightsaber combined with John Williams’ “Binary Sunset” makes for a spectacular sequence. “Binary Sunset” plays in A New Hope when Luke Skywalker realizes his destiny of becoming a Jedi after Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru are killed. In The Force Awakens, the Force calls to Rey in response to the rise of the First Order. Rey acknowledges her destiny, and takes her first steps towards becoming a Jedi.

6 The Force Awakens Finale

Luke Skywalker is absent for the entirety of The Force Awakens before being revealed in the film’s finale. According to Variety, director J.J. Abrams refers to the anticipation of seeing Luke Skywalker as a “great long drum roll up to seeing this guy“. Rey finally finds the Jedi Master on the aquatic planet of Ahch-To, presenting him with his lightsaber.

The scene features a silence between the characters, but Rey communicates in her eyes a desperate call for help. The beautiful island of Skellig Michael (used as Ahch-To), the music of John Williams, the mesmerizing silence of the scene, and Mark Hamill’s return constructs one of the best moments in the trilogy.

5 Finding Balance (The Last Jedi)

The Star Wars saga revolves around bringing balance to the Force. In Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, director and writer Rian Johnson includes a scene where Luke teaches Rey about that balance. The Force has both a light side and a dark side, and as Rey learns more about the Force, so does the audience.

While it is a very simple scene, Rey and Luke’s discussions are insightful and helps contextualize the learnings of the Jedi and the previous events of the saga. As an energy field generated by all living beings, the Force does not belong to any one individual. It does not belong to the Jedi.

4 No Place in this Story (The Last Jedi)

Director Rian Johnson surprised fans when The Last Jedi did not tie Rey’s identity to a special lineage. After defeating Snoke and his Praetorian Guards with the help of Rey, Ben Solo challenges Rey to confront the truth about her parents. Rey admits that her parents are “nobody”, with Ben even commenting that they decided to sell her for drinking money. As Rey admits the truth herself, the answer to questions about Rey’s parents is pretty definitive. A mixed fan reaction to the reveal however, caused director J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio to overwrite it in the next film.

Rey is in a position where she must decide who she is for herself. There is a rich contrast between Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, who is born into a well-known and powerful family. The idea that a hero can come from anywhere is inspiring, which is why Rey “Nobody” continues to resonate with so many Star Wars fans.

3 Lifting Rocks (The Last Jedi)

During The Last Jedi‘s final act, the Resistance fight a losing battle against the First Order on the salty mineral planet of Crait. The Resistance are overwhelmed and must buy time for help to arrive. Luke Skywalker’s arrival is able to buy time, but it is not until Rey clears the boulders blocking an exit that allows the Resistance to escape.

The middle chapter of the sequel trilogy presents Rey, Finn, and Poe with many challenges, forcing them to learn and grow. As Luke declares he will not be the “last Jedi”, the camera focuses on Rey, confirming that she will be the one to carry the torch.

2 Kissing Ben Solo (The Rise of Skywalker)

Romance is an important part of the Skywalker saga, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker finally allows characters to brush lips in the sequels. The dyad between Rey and Ben Solo connects the two and essentially makes them soulmates. After defeating Palpatine, the two finally kiss — however, Ben Solo awkwardly drops dead immediately afterwards and is never seen or mentioned in the film again.

Ben Solo’s death feels like a cheap way of avoiding keeping a former villain alive. The kiss between Rey and a redeemed Ben Solo at the least, brings Ben Solo back to the light and allows him to experience happiness before fading into the Force.

1 Rey Skywalker (The Rise of Skywalker)

Star-Wars-Rey-Skywalker

Rey is the daughter of a non-Force-sensitive “failed” clone of Palpatine. Ultimately, she distances herself from her evil “grandfather” and takes the name of Skywalker. The scene is definitely not perfect, clashing with the idea presented in The Last Jedi that Rey does not need to be a Skywalker, Palpatine, or Kenobi. However, the scene still manages to represent hope as Rey carries forth the Skywalker legacy. The Skywalker Saga concludes with Palpatine failing to conquer the galaxy and destroy the Jedi.

“Some things are stronger than blood”, Luke tells Rey in The Rise of Skywalker. Rey may be related by blood to Palpatine, but she adopts the Skywalker name to honor her mentors. The Skywalker bloodline reaches its end, but the legacy and what Luke and Leia stood for will live forever.
