#FIFTY FIFTY and Kaliii sample Janet Jackson on “Barbie Dreams”

Jackson’s 1997 smash “Together Again” serves as the foundation for the latest song from the Barbie soundtrack.

FIFTY FIFTY and Kaliii sample Janet Jackson on “Barbie Dreams”

The Barbie soundtrack, to its credit, has produced more memorable pop moments than most major motion picture soundtracks. Highlights include Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie World” (which interpolates Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” and is now a top 10 hit), Charli XCX softening up the edges of her Vroom Vroom era for “Speed Drive,” and PinkPantheress mixing club music, ’90s pop, and Irish fiddle for the delightful and supremely weird “Angel.” On Thursday, K-pop group FIFTY FIFTY and Kaliii kept the streak going with “Barbie Dreams,” the soundtrack’s latest cut.

“Barbie Dreams” may be the Barbie song to best channel the satirical bent of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl,” which judging from the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s film, seems to be a big tonal sticking point in the current Barbie-verse. A souped-up interpolation of Janet Jackson’s 1997 single “Together Again” forms the basis of the hook and lead melody; the Eurodance atmosphere is both something Aqua would thrive in and something you could imagine being released alongside “Together Again” as an official remix. Kaliii and the members of FIFTY FIFTY celebrate friendship and material things in their respective, over-the-top fashions that sound like, well, the interior monologues of Barbie dolls. Mission accomplished! Hear it below.
