The filmmakers and cast will be honored with the Vanguard Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival on Jan. 4, then gather on nearby ancestral lands for a cultural exchange ceremony between the Osage Nation and the Agua Caliente tribe on Jan. 5.

BEST DIRECTOR

Ava DuVernay, Origin

Seven years after her first Oscar nom, for the doc 13th, DuVernay is back in contention for this drama about castes throughout the world and history. She’ll be doing a Q&A following a screening at L.A.’s Museum of Tolerance on Jan. 6.

BEST ACTOR

Colman Domingo, Rustin

On the hunt for his first Oscar nom, this Emmy winner heads to Palm Springs, where Lenny Kravitz will present him with the Spotlight Award (Actor) on Jan. 4, then returns to L.A. for a Jennifer Hudson-moderated Q&A at CAA on Jan. 5.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Willem Dafoe, Poor Things

The veteran actor, who’s been Oscar-nominated for Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, The Florida Project and At Eternity’s Gate, will promote his latest contender at the ceremony unveiling his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Jan. 8.

BEST MAKEUP/HAIRSTYLING

Maestro

The Oscar-shortlisted work of Kay Georgiou, Sian Grigg, Kazu Hiro and Lori McCoy-Bell was recognized with three noms from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild for its awards. The only film with more — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — was not shortlisted.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“Dance the Night,” Barbie

Dua Lipa’s Oscar-shortlisted tune, a banger built for parties, was played a lot on New Year’s Eve, nowhere more prominently than as part of London’s post-midnight fireworks extravaganza that aired live on the BBC, reaching millions.
