What Is Among Us?

Among Us is an online multiplayer social deduction game released by InnerSloth on July 15, 2018. The game takes place in a space-themed setting where players each take on one of two roles, the majority of players being Crewmates, and a predetermined number being imposters.

The goal for the Crewmates is to identify the imposters and vote them off the ship, or finish the tasks to win. The Imposters wander the map with the intent to kill Crewmates without being identified.

In 2020, a surge in popularity made by content creators online was started in South Korea and Brazil and eventually made its way into the English-speaking world. Bromander stated that Mexico, Brazil, and South Korea are even more popular locations for the game than the United States.

InnerSloth has cancelled Among Us 2 to focus on the first version of the game. They plan to work on the game’s core code and bring future updates and maps to users worldwide. InnerSloth has also considered releasing the game on consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One, but encountered a problem in implementing player communication, as a standard text-based or voice-based chat seemed unusable.

How To Play Among Us?

Play online or over local WiFi with 4-10 players as you attempt to prep your spaceship for departure, but beware as one will be an impostor bent on killing everyone!

Crewmates can win by completing all tasks or discovering and voting the impostor off the ship.

The Impostor can use sabotage to cause chaos, making for easier kills and better alibis.

If a player finds a dead body, they can report it, which will lead to a group meeting where all other gameplay is halted and players discuss who they believe an Impostor is based on the evidence surrounding the killing.

To help determine the identity of Impostors, there are various tracking systems in each map, such as a security camera system in the Skeld, a doorlog in Mira HQ, and a vitals indicator in Polus. 

If a plurality vote is reached, the chosen person is ejected from the map and dies. Players may also call an “emergency meeting” by pressing a button in the map at any time.

 Players communicate in a text chat, but can only speak during meetings, and only if they are alive, although ghosts can speak with each other. While the game does not have a built-in voice chat system, it is common for players to use external programs such as Discord while playing. 

Various customization options to aspects of gameplay, such as vision range and emergency meetings, are available in each game’s lobby. There are also many cosmetic options, including spacesuit colors, skins, hats, and pets, some of which are paid downloadable content.
