“#Fans of Demon Slayer in Japan Are Warned to Not Climb Tokyo's Largest Mountain”

Mount Kumotori is one of the "sacred places" for fans of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise, being the supposed birthplace of the Kamedo siblings and where the story of the record-breaking series starts. As with anything related to Demon Slayer, this has caused the mountain to become a hot-spot for fans of the franchise, who are choosing to climb to the 2,017-meter high peak … in just shorts and sandals … during a chilly Autumn.

This has spurred the Okutama Visitor Center to issue a warning to beginner climbers, saying "Mount Kumotori is not a mountain that can be climbed easily. Even experienced climbers can take 6 to 7 hours to reach the summit one way. For beginners that may take more than 10 hours." The Center is "worried" about the number of people who go up in "T-shirts and shorts, which are obviously out of place for mountaineering" and then coming back down mid-hike.

Okutama Town, the closest township to the mountain regularly reaches below freezing. A representative from the Visitor Center suggests that beginners should look into warmer clothes, a spare change of clothes, equipment, food/water, and even just any sort of camping gear for a 2 to 3-day trek.
