Hong Kong-born singer Coco Lee has passed away at the age of 48. The artist was known for her powerful vocals and beloved across Asia. Coco Lee shot to global fame with her role as the Mandarin voice of Mulan in Disney’s animated film of the same name. Outside of her Mulan fame, she delivered soaring performances and took Asian music to new heights throughout her career. Her untimely death has left fans and the entertainment industry in shock. How did Coco Lee die?

Coco Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, took to Instagram to announce the news that the beloved singer had passed away. They revealed that she had been battling depression for several years, and her condition had deteriorated significantly in recent months. 

Coco Lee was admitted to a hospital in Hong Kong on Sunday following a suicide attempt and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday. The sisters mentioned that despite Coco’s efforts to seek professional help, she ultimately fell victim to her mental struggles.

Her sister, Nancy, revealed that her funeral would be delayed to at least August. An autopsy is pending to uncover the extent of her undisclosed battle with breast cancer. On Weibo, a hashtag associated with Coco Lee’s death garnered an astounding 200 million views.

Coco Lee’s stellar career

Coco Lee released her first album at the age of 19, in a career that spanned over three decades. While she initially sang only in Mandarin, Lee went on to make albums in Cantonese and English, growing her audience base around the world.

Her first international breakthrough came with the Mandarin version of the ballad Reflection for Disney’s Mulan. She also sang A Love Before Time for the soundtrack of Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Fast forward to the 2001 Academy Awards where Coco Lee became the first singer of Chinese descent to perform at the Oscars stage. Her success paved the way for other Chinese singers to gain global recognition. 

Her Hollywood fame kept getting bigger thanks to her English-language hits like Before I Fall in Love, featured in Julia Roberts’ Runaway Bride.

The Mulan star’s personal life

Born Ferren Lee on January 17, 1975, in Hong Kong, Coco Lee moved to California during her secondary school years before becoming a singer. In 1994, she finished as the first runner-up in an annual singing competition hosted by Hong Kong’s TVB

Coco Lee almost decided to choose an entirely different path and follow her mother’s footsteps to become a doctor. However, she pursued her love for singing after winning in the Hong Kong singing competition

Throughout her career, the Mulan star was close with her mother and sisters, especially Nancy Lee who suggested the name Coco. She also served as her wardrobe consultant, public relations officer, and makeup artist.

In 2011, Coco Lee married Canadian businessman Bruce Rockowitz, the former CEO of Li & Fung. She had two stepdaughters from her marriage.
