“FIFA The Best Award results leaked – who will win?”

Ahead of tonight’s FIFA’s The Best awards ceremony in Paris, the results have been leaked by multiple sources. All hints point to Argentine football legend Lionel Messi being crowned tonight as the best player by FIFA for the year 2022. The result comes as no surprise as the PSG superstar turned all heads globally in December when he led his national team to a historic World Cup win at Qatar.

According to reports, Messi has beaten his fellow nominees Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema by a significant margin. Speculative leaks are common when it comes to results like FIFA’s The Best or France Football’s Ballon d’Or. However, this time it has been confirmed by reputed football journalists such as Fabrizio Romano. 

Messi, Mbappe or Benzema: who was 2022’s best?

Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Karim Benzema were announced as the final three nominees for FIFA The Best Men’s Player of the Year award earlier this month. The trio surpassed other candidates such as Robert Lewandowski, Kevin de Bruyne, and Vinicius Junior to make it to the final shortlist.

Despite being 35 years old, Messi’s phenomenal World Cup campaign and his tally of 30 goals and 20 assists have put him in the driver’s seat. His fellow PSG attacker Mbappe leads him in terms of goals but falls short after losing to Argentina despite a historic hattrick in the World Cup final.

Injuries marred the second half of the season for current Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema, notably missing the World Cup. In spite of that, Benzema spearheaded a prolific UEFA Champions League campaign for Real Madrid. The fireworks restarted a week ago as Benzema and Vinicius stunned Liverpool with a 5-2 comeback victory at Anfield.

Other FIFA The Best Awards for 2022

Apart from the Men’s Player of the Year, FIFA The Best Football Awards will honor the best women’s player and the best men’s and women’s goalkeepers and coaches. The much-awaited FIFA FIFPRO World 11 will also be revealed tonight along with the Puskas award for best goal.

• Lionel Messi is not the only one to reap the rewards from Argentina’s World Cup victory. Manager Lionel Scaloni and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez are also in line to do a complete national sweep of awards at FIFA The Best.
• They are in some serious competition against the likes of Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola among managers and Thibaut Courtois and Yassine Bounou among goalkeepers.

FIFA The Best and Ballon d’Or previous winners

Keep in mind that FIFA The Best is different from the Ballon d’Or as the partnership between FIFA and France Football ended in 2016. Since then, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski lead the awards tally with 2 wins each. Lionel Messi and Luka Modric have won one apiece, with the former expected to win his second tonight.

Winning FIFA The Best award tonight will push Messi closer towards a staggering eighth Ballon D’Or victory. That is three more than the second-best Cristiano Ronaldo record of five.
