#Ex-Ohio cop indicted in murder of unarmed black man Andre Hill

A former Ohio police officer was charged with the murder of Andre Maurice Hill, an unarmed black man who was fatally shot in December, the state’s attorney general announced Wednesday.

A grand jury in Franklin County indicted ex-Columbus Police Officer Adam Coy on a murder charge after an investigation by the Ohio Attorney General’s office revealed he failed to use his body camera during the Dec. 22 encounter with Hill.

The ex-cop was arrested Wednesday evening and has a court appearance the next day.

Coy gunned down 47-year-old Hill after responding to a call that a person in a car had been turning the engine on and off.

Hill, who had been inside a garage, approached him and other officers while holding a cell phone in his left hand.

Coy — who is white — then fired at Hill thinking he had a gun, but no weapon was recovered from the scene, authorities said.

The 19-year veteran was fired on Dec. 28 for failing to activate his body camera’s audio during the incident and for not providing Hill with medical attention.

Michael Wright, an attorney representing Hill’s family, told The Columbus Dispatch that they’re grateful the Attorney General Dave Yost took action.

“We’re happy that this has occurred, but this is a first step. We want the officer to be convicted, we want him to be incarcerated,” the attorney said. “The family is happy and they’re cautiously optimistic that officer Coy will have to pay the price and be convicted for the killing of Andre Hill.”

Lawyer Mark Collins told the Dispatch Coy wasn’t surprised by the indictment, and the police union representing Columbus police officers said it will see how the case plays out.
