Today, Samsung took to the virtual stage and unveiled a slew of new products at its August Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event. Debuting stunning new devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3, Galaxy Buds 2, and Galaxy Watch 4.

From a new and improved Fold 3 with water resistance and an optional stylus to a more durable Galaxy Z Flip 3 at a lower $999 price tag, Samsung really wants you to buy a folding phone. So much, in fact, that there isn’t a Galaxy Note 21 getting released this year. What you see below is what you get.

That said, all four new devices are available to pre-order today and begin shipping on August 27th. So if you were too busy or still sleeping when it all went down, here’s a quick look at everything you need to know.

The most exciting new Samsung phone for me is the improved and more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 3. At just $999, this is Samsung’s most affordable folding phone ever. At first glance, the new Galaxy Z Flip 3 looks very similar to the last model, but Samsung actually improved it in several key areas.

The first thing buyers will notice is the bigger and better 1.9-inch “Cover Display” on the outside. Instead of only being a viewfinder for selfies and showing the date, now you can add wallpapers or GIFs, sync with your Galaxy Watch 4’s watch face, control music, and even record videos from the cover screen. Plus, that big screen looks great next to the two improved 12MP cameras. One is a regular lens, while the other is a 12MP ultra-wide shooter.

On the inside, you’ll find a better, brighter, more durable 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung claims the Flip 3 PET display is 30-percent more durable than its predecessor. Up top, there’s a 10MP selfie camera.

Spec-wise, the Flip 3 features a 64-bit Octa-Core processor and 8GB of RAM. There’s 5G and Wi-Fi 6E support, and it comes with either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Samsung made the Flip 3 IPX8 water-resistant and debuted several neat cases and straps for the clamshell phone, too.

At $999 — nearly $400 less than the last one — it’s the most affordable foldable Samsung’s ever released and the first one that comes in under $1,000.  You can read more about it here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

The star of the show today is the latest Galaxy Z Fold 3 with water resistance, an under-display selfie camera, and an optional S-Pen stylus. The third-generation Galaxy Z Fold is Samsung’s best yet.

Samsung went big on the screens by making both the front 6.1-inch “Cover Screen” and the bigger 7.6-inch inner display 120hz for a fast and smooth experience. The new Galaxy Z Fold 3 is lighter and thinner than previous models and IPX8-rated for water resistance. Furthermore, the display is stronger than ever before.

Samsung completely redesigned the digitizer and claims the Fold 3 screen is 80-percent more durable than last year, making it strong enough to use an S-Pen stylus. You can still see the crease, unfortunately, but this is still a welcomed improvement.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is packed with the latest cutting-edge technology, too. It’s powered by a new 5nm 64-bit Octa-core processor, packs in 12GB of RAM, and has a large 4,400 mAh battery. You’ll also get fast wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and the choice of 256 or 512GB of storage.

As for cameras, all three main shooters are 12MP, including a regular ultra-wide, wide-angle, and telephoto setup. The inner selfie camera is only 4MP, but it’s hidden under the screen for an improved experience. The pixels around the camera are bigger, so you might notice it, but at least there isn’t a big hole in the display.

It’s $200 cheaper than last year and starts at $1,799 when it hits shelves come August 27th. You can read more about it here.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2

Samsung also announced a new pair of its entry-level wireless earbuds today. They’re smaller and lighter, have longer battery life, a three-stage active noise cancellation, and have a new 2-way speaker system for improved sound. The cases look like any other earbud case, which charges the buds, but when you open them up, you’ll get joyful colors that match your earbuds or new Galaxy Z Fold 3. Like everything else, they’ll ship on August 26 with a 27th release date for $149. You can read more about them here.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 classic are hopefully a huge leap forward for Android smartwatches. That’s because they’re not only the first smartwatches with a 5nm chipset for improved performance and battery life, but they run a new hybrid operating system that combines the best of Google’s Wear OS with Samsung’s Tizen One UI.

Both watches are fully customizable with straps or bands, have optional 4G LTE support, and more importantly, you can add apps from the Play Store instead of only the Gear OS setup from before.

You can get the new Galaxy Watch 4 in 40mm (1.2-inch display), and 44mm (1.4-inch display) sizes or go even bigger with the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The Classic models sport a bigger 42mm and 46mm size since they feature the rotating control dial around the screen. The display sizes are the same for all four watches, but the dial takes up more space. Internally, they’re exactly the same.

The Galaxy Watch 4 is the first smartwatch to offer readings on skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, and body fat percentage, thanks to a new BioActive sensor for calculating body composition. Previously you had to use a special device or see your doctor for that type of information. Samsung claims this new sensor is 98% accurate, too.

That sensor also monitors blood pressure, can detect irregular heartbeats, measures blood oxygen, and more. The regular Galaxy Watch 4 runs you $250, while the Watch 4 Classic starts at $350 when they arrive on August 27th. You can read more about it here.

Samsung's green initiative
Samsung

To close out the show, Samsung wanted to highlight its efforts to go green and eliminate waste and harmful plastics. So Samsung unveiled a new sustainability initiative and is committed to eliminating all single-use plastic from its phone packaging by 2025, and will increase its use of recycled materials instead.

So not only are they going to use less plastic, but they plan to create products like earbuds or make the plastic inside of phones using materials recovered and recycled from the ocean by 2025. Considering Samsung ships more phones globally than anyone else, this is a big deal, and we hope other manufacturers will follow in its footsteps.

In closing, just remember that all of these devices are up for pre-order today and will be officially available starting August 27th.
