#Evangelion 3.0+1.0’s Final Run Pushes the Anime Film Past 9 Billion Yen

Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno may soon get his wish to see a 10 billion yen Evangelion film, as the official Twitter account for the series announced today that Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time has exceeded 9 billion yen at the Japanese box office as of its 100th day in theaters–the first film in Japan to do so in 2021 and bringing in over 3.7 billion yen more than the previous film in the series.

We reported on Monday that Evangelion 3.0+1.0, thanks to the updated “3.0+1.01” version being released in theaters and a 36-page bonus booklet being given out at screenings, had grossed 960.5% higher than the weekend before, which brought it to number one on the charts for the weekend. On Monday, it had grossed 1054.3% more than the previous Monday, giving the “final” Evangelion film this milestone.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). An updated version of the film, Evangelion 3.0+1.01, was released in Japanese theaters on June 12. There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
