Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

As Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time finishes up its run in Japanese theaters, after becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise as well as Hideaki Anno‘s highest-grossing film ever, the film has a few more angels up its sleeves for fans of the franchise that all start on June 12, including screening a new version of the film, dubbed “3.0+1.01.”

The first is a special 36-page booklet that will be given out to one million people who go watch Evangelion 3.0+1.0 after June 12. The booklet, titled “EVA-EXTRA-EXTRA,” contains images from Evangelion 3.0 and some special illustrations from the staff that worked on the film.

The second is the Evangelion 3.0+1.01 screenings, which will be starting in all regular theaters in Japan that are still showing the “final” Evangelion film. The film doesn’t contain any new story elements, and only as some cleaned by animation and minor corrections. The IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby versions of the film screening in Japan will continue to be the 3.0+1.0 version.

And finally, in talking about Dolby cinema, in the lead-up to the final screenings of the film, six new Dolby theaters across Japan will be showing Evangelion 3.0+1.0 starting June 12.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
