#Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Finally Surpasses Shin Godzilla, Becoming Anno’s Highest-grossing Film

According to Oricon News, Toei announced today that Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time earned 8,282,298,700 yen (75.7 million USD) on 5423475 admissions in 59 days since its release in Japan. It surpassed the domestic gross of Shin Godzilla (8.25 billion yen / 75.4 million USD), for which Hideaki Anno served as the general director and the screenplay writer, becoming the highest-grossing film in Anno’s career.

The fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy film series was released in Japan on March 8, 2021, and has already become the top-grossing film in the 25-year-old Evangelion anime franchise. The 155-minute film now ranks 22nd in the Japanese film’s box office ranking of all-time and needs 100 million yen more to exceed the current 21st film Stand By Me Doraemon (8.38 billion yen / 76.6 million USD).

At the stage greeting event held in Tokyo on April 11, Anno said that he hoped the film would make more than Shin Godzilla‘s box office gross to reach the highest record of any film he had worked on, and even exceed 10 billion yen for the revitalization of the animation industry.
